The American Girl Doll to Improve Reading Literacy

"Proceeds from the doll will be donated to the Save the Children organization."

There are many things that the American Girl Dolls do for the average young lady. Some teach life skills while others offer a level of pretend play that does not focus on the negative aspects of other dolls. However, a new doll may do much more. Meet McKenna. She is the doll that will challenge your kids and will help to support literacy as well.

In an effort to promote the Save the Children organization, American Girl is partnering up with the organization with a new doll. The doll's name is McKenna. She will be the company's Girl of the Year doll for 2012. The doll struggles with reading comprehension. As a result, her books often focus on the fact that she needs some reinforcement to learn to improve her reading skills.

According to Julie Parks who is a spokesperson for American Girl, "One issue that came to our attention was something called the fourth-grade slump. It affects many children as the focus in the classroom switches from learning to read to reading to learn. This character is about focusing on your strengths and using your strengths to get over some difficult challenges. That's a life skill that's good to learn early and continue to use throughout your life."

Changes in the American Girl Brand

There have been big changes since the '90s.

When I was a kid in the '90s, the American Girl doll brand was different than it is now. It was definitely more historically-based, and less focused on attracting a hip-and-cool demographic than it is now. Most of the girls who liked the brand read the books, which detailed the lives of the historical dolls. These books were the main focus of the company, and the accompanying dolls and their accessories were decidedly secondary--sort of like action figures modeled after a comic book.

Why Moms Love the Innocence of American Girl Dolls

Why is it that these higher end American Girl dolls continue to do so well even in the economic climate we are in right now? There are many people wondering why they should purchase that video game for their child or those scantily clad Barbie-like dolls for their kids. It is because of this that so many moms are in fact turning to American Girl dolls - they promote a level of innocence other products just do not.

Why I loved American Girl Dolls

I was first introduced to the American Girls when I was just 7 years old. The local library I frequently visited had a beautiful display of the first 5 dolls; Samantha, Kirsten, Felicity, Molly, and Addy. For each of these dolls, each one had a series of books set up around it. I, of course, was exactly the type of child these dolls were marketed to. Not was my favorite activity reading, but I loved reading about historical things and playing with dolls as well.

American Girl Dolls Given As Gift to Domestic Abuse Children

The holiday season tends to bring out the best in people, but this cannot just happen to adults. In fact, sometimes, it is those little moves by the kids that make such a big impact. For example, the YMCA Greenwich Domestic Abuse Services organization recently received a very generous donation of American Girl Dolls. The dolls came from a nine year old named Brinkley Blum also of Greenwich.

Which American Girl Doll Should I Buy My Daughter?

My 8 year old daughter, like most girls her age, is obsessed with American Girl dolls. I want to buy her one for Christmas, but I have no idea where to begin. Should I get her one of the customized dolls that looks just like her? Should I let her pick the doll herself? Or should I buy her one of the classic American Girl characters? Decisions, decisions.

I'm thinking about getting her one of the matching outfit sets, but I don't know if she's too old for that. Is it still cool to match your doll when you're in the third grade? Kids grow up so quickly these days, and I don't want to embarrass her.

American Girl Theft: The Problems Happening Now

American Girl dolls are collectibles. While newer versions are easy to find, older ones tend to be treasures lurking in the depths of basements just waiting to be found. Although these dolls teach young girls to become young ladies, there are now indications that this famed collection is being bought and sold, and stolen through ads on Craigslist and other organizations.

About the Dolls: Addy

"The American Girl doll, Addy Walker, was released in 1993."

The American Girl doll, Addy Walker, was released in 1993. She was the fifth historical doll that was released. Before her release Samantha, Kirsten, Molly, and Felicity were the only other dolls available.

The Start of the American Girl Company: Part 1

"The historical American Girls all have a personal history and story to tell."

Everyone knows that American Girl is a company that embodies the spirit, joy and development of girls and young women. They are more than just a line of dolls designed to capture the imagination of girls everywhere. Many people are quick to put them in the same category as the Bratz and Barbie dolls but let me set the record straight. American Girl is in a league all of her own.
