Each of the American Girl dolls, except for the ones added as friends and the Girl of the Year dolls, are meant to showcase the life of girls during different eras throughout the United States. The earliest year a doll represents in 1764 and the latest is in the 1970s.

Kaya’aton’my, nicknamed Kaya, represents the life of a Native American girl through 1764 to 1766. Her timeline takes places in the Pacific Northwest, before the settlement of the Europeans. From there, the timeline moves to the 1770s with colonial girl, Felicity Merriman. Felicity’s story covers the years 1774 to 1776.

After Felicity, Josefina Montoya is the next American Girl. Her story takes place between the years of 1824 to 1826 Josefina’s story takes place in Sante Fe, New Mexico while it was still under the rule of Mexico.

The next period of time that is covered in the American Girl stories is the 1850’s. This era takes place in two very different locales. The first locale is in New Orleans. This time period features both Cecile Rey and Marie-Grace Gardner. The other locale this time period takes place in is Minnesota. Kirsten Larson is the American Girl who represents this time and area.

After the 1850s, the time period of the 1860s is depicted through the life of American Girl Addy Walker. Addy represents the Civil War era and her story takes place between the years of 1864 and 1866. After Addy, the years jump ahead to 1904 with the story of Samantha Parkington. Samantha’s story represents the Edwardian Era of the US.

After Samantha comes Rebecca Rubin. Rebecca’s story takes place between the years of 1914 and 1916. Her story represents America in the early twentieth-century during a wave of European immigration. Kit Kitteredge’s story follows Rebecca’s and takes place in the 1930s. Kit’s life is meant to be a representation of the Great Depression.

Following Kit is Molly McIntire. Molly’s story takes place between 1943 and 1946 and takes place during the era of World War II. The American Girl Julie Albright represents the last historical era. Her story takes place in the 1970s.
