For many years, girls have had the ability to dress up just as their American Girl doll was dressed. This is because in 1988 Pleasant Company began to produce historically accurate dresses that were replicas of the one’s that the dolls wore. These were made in sizes that would fit little girls and were met to be worn more as costumes and for role-playing than they were for the children to wear them out in public.
These dresses range in time from Spanish California in 1824 through the World War II era. And beyond. Each of these dresses were sold for the purpose of allowing little girls to emulate their favorite American Girl dolls. Some of these items will range from being able to dress up to wearing the same pajamas so you could go to sleep just as your doll did.
Most of the items are not being manufactured currently. Predominantly the nightgowns and nightshirts are the most readily available as well as the coat that was worn by Samantha. However, there are still many available by going to discount shops and by going to online retailers to find these collectible items.
In order to truly feel like an American Girl many felt that they needed to dress the part. That is one of the reasons these clothes were so popular and so many children just had to have them. For the most part since 2004, the only ones that are available are the pajamas and the Samantha coat, but you never know, they may come back again.
