Samantha Parkington was one of the first American girl dolls to be made. Samantha has long been one of the most popular American Girl dolls available and was introduced in 1986. Many people were sad to find out that she would be retired in October 2008.

Life and Personality
Samantha is a girl of the Victorian era and her story takes place starting in the year of 1904. Samantha is an orphan who lived with her old-fashioned grandmother, called Grandmary. Along with her grandmother, her Uncle Gardner helped to raise her and acted as a father figure.
Samantha is a very curious and adventurous girl. Additionally, she has a creative streak and enjoys painting and playing the piano.
The Doll
The Samantha doll came dressed in a maroon checked taffeta dress with a matching maroon checked taffeta bow. Along with this, she wore black stockings and Mary Janes. Her accessories included a plush burgundy hat, a golden brooch in the shape of the locket, and a clasp purse made of pink velvet. Inside the purse, a handkerchief and an Indian-head penny could be found.
Products
Along with the Samantha doll, the American Girl company released books that told her story. Originally, there were six books available. Along with these books, clothing and accessories were released as well. The clothing and accessories matched the content of each book. For example, for Samantha’s birthday book, you could purchase her pinafore dress and party accessories.

In 2004, a full-length movie about Samantha was released starring AnnaSophia Robb. The film was titled “An American Girl Holiday”.
